Why video estates fail quietly.
Nobody sets out to run cameras that do not record. It happens because the failure mode of a camera is silence, and silence is what a working camera pointed at an empty corridor looks like too.
An offline camera looks like a quiet corridor
On a wall of two hundred tiles, a dead feed and a still one are the same picture. Unless something is actively checking, the estate degrades one camera at a time and the video wall keeps looking fine.
The estate is multi-brand by accident
Hikvision at one site, Dahua at another, a recorder installed by a contractor who has since moved on, and an NVR nobody has the password for. Each brand has its own tool, and none of them covers the estate.
Nobody actually owns the cameras
Security owns the policy, IT owns the network they sit on, and facilities owns the hardware. A camera that stops working belongs to whichever of the three happens to notice, which is why it can stay broken for months.

A switch port, a PoE budget, a saturated uplink, a VLAN change. The platform monitoring the switch is the platform monitoring the camera, so the diagnosis is one step rather than a conversation between three teams.

How camera monitoring works.
Four stages. The first one is usually the uncomfortable one — discovery tends to find more cameras than the inventory has, and fewer working ones.
Discover the estate
ONVIF discovery and recorder inventory identify what is actually deployed — make, model, firmware, site, and which switch port each camera hangs off. The list that comes back is rarely the list anybody was maintaining by hand.
Watch health continuously
Reachability, stream availability, frame rate and recorder status are polled on a schedule rather than checked on request, and each camera is baselined against its own normal so a degrading feed is visible before it is a dead one.
Analyse the video
AI analytics run on the existing feeds — face recognition against watchlists, ANPR with Indian plate-format validation, behaviour analytics, PPE compliance, perimeter tripwires and visitor counting — with no new cameras required to start.
Alert, diagnose, act
A health fault arrives with its network context attached, so it can be fixed rather than merely noted. An analytics event arrives with its snapshot and clip. Both land in the same operations queue as everything else the platform watches.

A camera monitoring system (CMS) watches the video estate itself — whether every camera is reachable, streaming, recording and covering what it is supposed to cover — as distinct from a video management system (VMS), which is concerned with viewing, recording and retrieving the video. PrahiX does both in one view, on the grounds that footage you cannot rely on is not really an asset.

No. Both the health monitoring and the analytics run against existing feeds, which is the point — a video estate is expensive and mostly already installed. If specific cameras are too old to speak ONVIF or RTSP, we will tell you which ones during discovery rather than after a purchase order.
Usually, and this is the part a VMS cannot do. Because the same platform monitors the switches, the PoE budgets and the uplinks those cameras depend on, a camera dropping and a switch port failing are visible as one event rather than as a video problem reported to one team and a network problem reported to another.
